RX Relaxicam® Suspensión Oral 10 ml

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, indicated for the treatment of pain and inflammation, being useful in cases of acute and/or chronic arthritis, as well as osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) and as an analgesic in cases of trauma and inflammatory processes of soft tissues (airways), gynecological and otic conditions.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The active ingredient is meloxicam, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), a class of enolic acid with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties. It is a relatively selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), the enzyme that converts arachidonic acid into prostanoids (thromboxane, prostacyclin, and prostaglandins) responsible for mediating inflammation. Therefore, its administration reduces pain, inflammation, and fever. Evidence has shown that COX-2 inhibition is responsible for the therapeutic effect of NSAIDs, while COX-1 inhibition is responsible for gastric and renal side effects. Meloxicam, being more specific for COX-2 inhibition and to a lesser extent for COX-1 inhibition, reduces the known side effects.

INITIAL DOSE:

One drop contains 0.05 mg of Meloxicam.

Canines: 4 drops per kg (0.2 mg/kg of body weight every 24 hours).

Felines: 6 drops per kg (0.3 mg/kg body weight every 24 hours).

MAINTENANCE DOSE: 

Canines and felines: 2 drops per kg (0.1 mg/kg of body weight every 24 h).

The suspension should be administered mixed with food and not directly into the mouth, thus avoiding overdose.

The administration of treatment for prolonged periods is at the discretion of the veterinarian.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

Common side effects associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) include vomiting, diarrhea, bloody stools, increased or decreased appetite, behavioral changes, yellowing of the gums, skin, or eyes, and skin changes (redness, scaling, or itching). It is important to contact your veterinarian if any of these signs occur. It is also important to administer the lowest possible dose for the shortest possible time, taking into account the individual animal's response.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Rx Relaxicam® should not be administered with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, carprofen, etc.) or steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (cortisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone, etc.), with anticoagulant agents, aminoglycoside antibiotics, or substances with high protein affinity, as they may compete for binding and produce toxic effects.

It should not be administered to animals under 6 weeks of age, nor to pregnant or lactating females. Do not administer to dehydrated or hypovolemic animals. It should be administered with caution to patients with renal impairment.
