TARGET SPECIES
For canines and felines.
DESCRIPTION
Cephalosporins are antibiotics derived from cephalosporin C, a natural antibiotic produced by the fungus CEPHALOSPORIUM ACREMONIUM.
Cephalexin stands out among these for being an acid-stable, orally absorbed organism that achieves higher plasma levels than those obtained with first-generation cephalosporins administered parenterally.
Cephalexin is widely distributed in most tissues and body fluids, making it suitable for the systemic treatment of various bacterial, respiratory, urinary, genital tract, osteoarticular and skin infections affecting canines and felines.
It is effective against penicillin-resistant, gram-positive and gram-negative germs: Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., Proteus sp., E. Coli. Bacteroides, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomona sp. and Enterobacter sp.

CONTRAINDICATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS
Cephalosporins are contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to them.
Oral systemic antibiotics should not be administered to patients with septicemia, shock, or other serious illnesses where intestinal absorption of the antibiotic is compromised.
Do not administer to patients with renal insufficiency, since the main route of elimination is through urine and may cause accumulation.

SIDE EFFECTS
When cephalexin is administered orally, it may cause gastrointestinal effects due to alteration of the flora (anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea). Administration of the drug with a small amount of food may relieve symptoms. The use of cephalexin with broad-spectrum antibiotics with bacteriostatic reaction is not recommended, since they may interfere with the bactericidal action of the drug.
