20 drops of this product are equivalent to 10 mg of prednisolone (1 ml). Prednisolone dosages vary considerably depending on the intended therapeutic indication. The following dosages may be considered as a guide, but the final decision rests solely with the veterinarian. In all cases, the lowest dose and treatment regimen that achieves the desired effect should be sought.
Dogs: 0.5 to 3 mg/kg, equivalent to 1 to 6 drops per kilogram of body weight. Adjunctive therapy to the treatment of neoplasms (brain tumors, lymphomas, myelomas, macroglobulinemia, etc.): 0.5 to 1 mg/kg daily, then switch to alternate-day therapy. The dose should be adjusted according to the patient's needs. For adjunctive treatment of respiratory disorders (chronic bronchitis, allergic bronchitis, tracheal collapse, pneumonitis, hypersensitivity to lung parasites): 0.5 to 1.5 mg/kg daily. Alternate-day therapy may then be implemented. For adjunctive therapy of hepatic disorders (cholangitis, lymphocytic-plasmacytic hepatitis, toxic hepatopathies): 0.5 to 2 mg/kg/day. As adjunctive therapy in gastrointestinal disorders (eosinophilic colitis, eosinophilic enteritis, lymphoplasmacytic enteritis, ulcerative colitis, food allergy or intolerance, endotoxemia secondary to DTVG, intestinal lymphangiectasia): 0.5 to 2 mg/kg/day. For adrenal disease (adrenocortical insufficiency due to adrenalectomy for tumor or other causes, azotemia): 1 to 2 mg/kg/day. For CNS disorders (granulomatous meningoencephalitis, reticulosis, hydrocephalus, spinal cord compression syndrome, spondylopathy, Wobler syndrome, aseptic suppurative meningitis): 0.5 to 3 mg/kg, once or twice daily. For dermatopathies or immune-mediated disorders (urticaria and angioedema, canine atopy, allergic dermatitis, type II hypersensitivity, lupus erythematosus): 0.5 to 4 mg/kg.
Cats: As an immunosuppressant: 2 to 4 mg/kg/day divided into two doses. For adjunctive therapy in respiratory disorders (allergic bronchitis, feline asthma): 1 to 3 mg/kg/day. For adjunctive therapy in gastrointestinal disorders (lymphoplasmacytic enteritis, inflammatory bowel disease): 1 to 2 mg/kg/day divided into two doses. In chronic diarrhea, use 2 to 4 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks. Reduce by half for the next two weeks, and continue in this manner for approximately 3 months, according to the clinical response. For adjunctive treatment of plasmacytic gingivitis-pharyngitis: 1 to 2 mg/kg/day. For dermatological conditions (flea allergy, feline idiopathic miliary dermatosis, eosinophilic granuloma, eosinophilic ulcer): 1 to 2 mg/kg once or twice daily. For adjunctive therapy in feline neoplasms (lymphosarcoma, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, mast cell tumors): 1 to 4 mg/kg/day.
Precautions:
This product should not be administered to animals with systemic fungal infections. Do not use in pregnant or lactating animals. Adverse effects are generally associated with long-term administration of these drugs, especially if given at high doses or not on alternate-day therapy. The effects that manifest are related to hyperadrenocorticism. When administered to young animals, it may retard growth. In dogs, polydipsia, polyuria, and polyphagia may be seen with short-term therapies, as well as with alternate-day therapies. Adverse effects in dogs include: dry coat, weight gain, vomiting, diarrhea, elevated liver enzymes, gastrointestinal ulcers, lipidemia, activation or exacerbation of diabetes mellitus, muscle wasting, and behavioral changes. Cats generally require higher doses than dogs to achieve clinical effects, but produce fewer adverse effects. Occasionally, polydipsia, polyuria, and polyphagia with weight gain, diarrhea, or depression may occur.
